Effective Monday May 20, 2019, US President Donald Trump has signed proclamations that remove tariffs on aluminum and steel imports from Canada and Mexico.
Prior to 12:01 a.m. eastern daylight time on May 20, 2019, Any imports of steel articles from Canada and Mexico that were admitted into a U.S. foreign trade zone under ‘privileged foreign status’ …. , shall not be subject upon entry for consumption to the additional 25 percent ad valorem rate of duty as imposed by Proclamation 9705, as amended,”
A similar proclamation with regard to imported aluminum was also published .
Trump confirmed that the United States and Canada announced in a joint statement that they would lift mutual tariffs within two-days on aluminum and steel tariffs. They also agreed to end all pending litigation currently with the World Trade Organization and assurance of the prevention of the transshipment of aluminum and steel made outside of Canada or the United States. Trump also confirmed that the United States had also reached the same agreements with Mexico.
